Google Wave Introduces a High Standard Form of Communication

It was a dreamed project of Google to launch a public product on giving a high standard of digital communication. Two days ago during the Google I/O keynote, Google’s VP of Engineering Vic Gundotra introduces a grand vision for a brand new method of communication for this new era. And that is called the Google Wave.

A “wave” was defined in Google Blog as an equal parts conversation and document, where people can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

Everyone uses email and instant messaging on the web now, isn’t it right? But imagine if you could tie those two forms of communication together and add a load of functionality on top of it. And that is what Google said as Wave. Wave was born out of an idea of Jen Rasmussen that email and instant messageing were very successful long time ago. Since then, many different forms of communications like blogs, wikis, and collaborative documents were invented and so the computers and networks had been continuously improving. So Jen proposed a new communication model that presumed all these advances.

So how Google Wave will work? In Google Wave you create a wave and add people to it. Everyone on your wave can use richly formatted text, photos, gadgets, and even feeds from other sources on the web. They can insert a reply or edit the wave directly. It’s concurrent rich-text editing, where you see on your screen nearly instantly what your fellow collaborators are typing in your wave. That means Google Wave is just as well suited for quick messages as for persistent content — it allows for both collaboration and communication. You can also use “playback” to rewind the wave and see how it evolved.

Google is not just thingking of Wave as another web application. It also wants you to be able to use it across your blog. As a post you could share a wave with the public and allows other to see what you and other people in your wave are doing. And these visitors to your blog could even join in as well right from your blog, and all the information would be placed right into the original wave.

Google Wave has three layers to encourage the developer community to get involved on this fantastic project.

  1. Product – in where people will use to access and edit waves.
  2. Platformin where developers are allowed to embed waves in other web services, and to build new extensions that work inside waves.
  3. Protocol – in which allows edits to be reflected instantly across users and services.
