Tips on Optimizing Wordpress Blog
After obtaining the Dreamhost and domain from Donald..thanks again for all your help, now Im ready with optimizing my wordpress blog. I got these tips from the combined forces of Marghil and Yoast blogs. I really appreciate all your efforts in posting information about SEO. Now I considered you all as my Masters in blogging.
To start it all, according to yoast, Wordpress is a well optimized system and featured a better job allowing every single page to be indexed than every other CMS. But we still need to change few things to make it a lot easier to rank your page high.
1. The first thing I did is to delete the default admin account. It means that you have to create another admin username and delete the default admin username for security purposes and to avoid hacking of passwords. Pls click here on how to do this.
2. In Settings: The first thing to change is your Permalink Settings. You’ll find this page under Setting -> Permalinks -> Common Settings. Click the Common Structure box and change it to /%category%/%postname%/
Next thing to do is to install the Redirection plugin, and check carefully under Manage -> Redirection -> Options. Make sure both URL Monitoring select boxes are set to “Modified posts”. Now you can change those permalinks to perfectly SEO’d permalinks without having to do anything else, or worry about the search engine consequences.
General Settings should be: Timezone: UTC +8. To reflect Philippine time. Week Starts On: Sunday
Discussion Settings :Uncheck: Break comments into pages with… To avoid duplicate content. Uncheck all options on: Before a comment appears… so that people can already comment without my intervention.
3. Optimize your Titles for SEO -> The title of your blog post by default is Blog Title > Blog Archive> Keyword rich post title. To get a high traffic your blog deserves this should be the other way around, for Search engine put more weight on the early words, so if your keywords are near the start of the page title you are more likely to rank well and people scanning result pages see the early words first.
I install the HeadSpace plugin to understand it very easy. You should check your header.php though, and make sure that the code for wp_title(); contains two quotes, so it looks like this: wp_title('');. This makes sure you have absolute control over the title and don’t have any annoying separator in there. The go to Headspace Settings and check what it look likes for your posts and pages.
For the other pages, you may use the following depending on your preferences.

4. Install and activate the following plugins which according to Marghil will be of great help for your wordpress blog.
- WP-Super-Cache. For caching, I guess this is already install in the new Wordpress version.
- Add-Meta-Tags plugin. Adds the Description and Keywords XHTML META tags to your blog’s front page and to each one of the posts, static pages and category archives.
- Related Entries plugin. For generating related entries after the post. Good for SEO internal linking.
- Sitemap Generator. For generating sitemap compatible with the 3 search engines.
- Login Lockdown. For restricting the rate at which failed logins can be re-attempted from a given IP range
- Akismet. Spam protection.
5. Optimize the More Text
Another neat feature of HeadSpace is that you can use it to optimize the more text, so if you use a more tag on the frontpage, you can replace the default “Read more” link with something meaningful for every post. It’s small things like that that make your WordPress SEO the best.
6. Edit the .httaccess file
- Disabled hotlinking of images to conserve bandwidth. Pls add this code on your .httaccess file. Change crisiboy.com by your domain

Block know bad bots from accessing your site.
7. Install my robots meta plugin, and make sure the settings prevent indexing of all archive pages, like this:
This must be done to avoid duplicate contents. The search engine will follow all the links on these archive pages, but it won’t show those pages in the index.
And the rest should be done later on. This will helped a lot to improve your page ranking and at the same time you will attain your smooth Wordpress Blog Optimization procedures.

- Google Adsense Placement
- Bond with your commenters
- Follow your commenters
- Use Twitter and Plurk
- Find Related Blogs and Work with them
This guide basically gives you many ideas and tips on what you can do with your blog. This is what I followed based on the techniques of Marghil and Yoast. And according to Yoast, if you want to rank for highly competitive terms, you’ll have to actually do most of it.
